Ontario Racers Claim 16 Medals at Ontario Provincial Championship

The Ontario Disabled Alpine Racing Team captured 16 medals this past weekend, at the Ontario Disabled Alpine Racing Championships, held at the beautiful Horseshoe Resort, near Barrie, Ontario. Close to 50 people attended the event, representing teams from Ontario, Quebec, National Capital Division, and the Canadian National Team.

In the women’s category, veteran racer Jan Hymers of Brampton stayed consistent, claiming bronze in both the slalom and giant slalom. First time racer Alexandra Creighton from Toronto, took 4th place in the giant slalom, in her first race ever with the Ontario team. In the junior category, rookie racer Will Goessart from Toronto continued to impress all onlookers, taking home silver in both the slalom and giant slalom. In the blind division, Team Ontario president David Brown of Toronto, and guide Gwen Binsfeld of King City, took bronze in the giant slalom and silver in the slalom. In his first race of the season, Kitchener’s Ken Roche had a spectacular crash in the giant slalom, and was still able to bounce back and capture the bronze in the slalom.

Ontario racers also enjoyed great success in the other men’s divisions. They were able to sweep all medals in the men’s standing giant slalom, and again packed the podium for the sit ski slalom division. The sit skiers were lead by National Team member Jeff Penner of Kitchener, who grabbed the gold in both slalom and giant slalom. Bill Brouse of Puslinch was also a double medal winner, taking bronze in both disciplines. Andre Nasvytis of Dundas turned in another solid effort, finishing 4th in the giant slalom, and capturing silver in the slalom. In the standing category, National Team member Jeff Dickson of Sudbury, turned in the fastest runs of the day, in taking the gold medal for the giant slalom. Rookie Neil Mosburger of Kitchener turned in a solid effort taking 6th in the giant slalom, and 5th in the slalom. But the weekend really belonged to sophomore racer Rob “Franz Klammer” Scott of Whitby, who not only claimed bronze in the giant slalom and gold in the slalom, but also captured both the National Series and O.D.A.R.T. trophies for having the best combined times for all of the weekend events.

What’s next for Team Ontario ? The Canadian National Team members are off to Torino Italy for the 2006 Paralympic Winter Games, while the rest of the team heads to Mont Cascades Quebec for The Eastern Canadian Disabled Ski Championships.

The Ontario Disabled Alpine Racing Team wishes to thank all the coaches and volunteers, as well as all the wonderful people at Horseshoe Resort, for making the Ontario Championships a great success. We would also like to thank Alpine Canada, Telus, Ski Rossignol Canada, EMI Music Canada, The Bike Stop of Orillia, Corbett’s Sports Oakville, HSBC, and Wal Mart Ancaster, for their generous support of the event.
